The unique pixel

Why was Pikselis (Pixel) named this way, why, why.. Well, if he were bigger, he'd be Megapixel, but he's just a little Pixel :)

The cuddly-shaggy Tadukas needs a new home

We'd like to present Tadukas from "SOS animals" shelter (Tadeušas to strangers) because this puppy is so modest he'll barely let you know he's there.. He's a  small, mature dog, healthy, vaccinated, castrated. He only looks shaggy though - his fur is actually so soft you could cuddle him for ever:)

Tadukas is quiet, a little shy, he likes to stay away from strangers - perhaps that's why he doesn't attract the attention of our guests, even though a lot of people look for small dogs...

Saved from mortal dangerl: Juodoji Perla, Perliukas and Hačiko

We received a worrying message: in the village of Tribliai, Vilnius district, a stray dog had 8 pups, and people were not pleased. They were about to start collecting money to put her down. Sterilization is of course to complex a word for our old-fashioned people... Although Vilnius is so close, civilization seems light years away in those parts. Even if the dog didn't have a home, this tragedy could have been avoided if there was only a normal person that had initiative in the village.

The girl is friendly, not angry or aggressive at all. She hid her pups as if she could feel danger, but... out of eight only one survived.

Three dogs came to the shelter: Juodoji Perla, her pup Perliukas and Hačiko - her friend.

Juodoji Perla is about 4 years old.

Five new pups (donations for vaccines are needed)

Introducing the new pups: Džina and Džuna.

Have you seen the flowers bloom in fields and meadows and gardens, beautiful and vivid, until we pick them, and they die within days, and we throw them away. That's what happened to Džina and Džuna, who lived freely since they were puppies, who were half strays, and, in their own way, happy. But then these small young pups  were caught and brought to "Grinda", where they were put in a cage and started to quietly fade away, their health deteriorated, they would not get up, they would not react to anything, they were terribly stressed and it soon came to the point where they were about to be put down.

We couldn't allow that and took the girls to our shelter.

Dora - little legs, big heart

Oh Dora, where were you when God was giving away height? You could have been a real shepherd, showing off your long legs, and maybe even caught someone's eye.

Where, where, Dora would say. I was waiting in line for brains!

Letters from home - have you been waiting?:)

Time flies, new animals come to the shelter, we have our everyday tasks and worries... But we never forget we need to find a moment for the information about the lives our pets that have found homes, and, of course, share it with you:) Maybe these stories will inspire some of you to bring a dog or kitten, a great or small one, into your life. Whatever you may think, there's still more good stories than bad, it's just that the bad ones get stuck in our heads...

But forget the bad things, let's see what the letters say.

"Hello, a few years have past and the puppy you've saved from Jurbarkas, Kutukas, is writing (actually, his owner is:)) Thank you so much for this wonderful little guy, he's a true man of the house, so clever and composed. I wish you the best of luck helping unfortunate animals, and I can't thank you enough for saving this small heart, because if it weren't for you, we never would have met. Good luck!"

Two Laika pups still need homes

Most of Šakira's pups have already found homes, but two of them, a black boy with a white cross on his chest and a velvety brown girl are still waiting in our yard. The pups are stable, like their mother, smart, friendly, pretty.

They'll grow above the knees. We don't know the father, but the mother is a Laika mixed-breed and the pups are quite like her in built.

The girl. She will have to be sterilized when the time comes, for her health and your peace of mind!

On fungus and kittens

The shelter receives many calls every day with requests to take in animals, and on one hand it's nice to know people notice and care about strays. But on the other hand, it is really sad, as knowing the reality of the situation obliges you to say no.

When a woman called, asking for help for three kittens, she didn't mention they had a serious fungal infection. She only said there were three small very ill kittens living under a balcony. Illness is not that bad when you have space for isolation and the disease is not very infectious, but... it was a serious fungus that had already eaten away a great part of their hair. Anyone who has come across a serious case of microsporum knows that it is sticky, frightening for most, therefore it is near impossible to find temporary care for affected animals and many clinics refuse to take them in. They also know that fungus can easily be transferred to another animal and even a person, such as a child or someone ill.

Senior Transas' plea for help (250 Lt is needed)

We do not know the story of this cream coloured senior - he had been found in the forest and brought to the shelter with a piece of rope for a leash. We only know the number of mites he brought from that forest - 50 (or more, as this was when we lost count...). The first days were difficult - the dog was indifferent to people, terribly sad, and all he did when taken outside was pace back and forth along the fence... Due to his exceptionally sedate nature we named the senior Transas (Trance). Every time he lost his appetite we would get anxious, we were expecting anything, beginning with babeiosis and ending with something a lot worse. Days passed, and Transas adapted himself, he started to appreciate people's company, notice his friends in the yard. It is so nice to watch him now, padding quickly around the yard, concentrated and always looking for something, curious, lively and healthy!

A nursery for puppies

There are a few nursery school classes in our shelter, and some puppies are even to young for those :) We want to see all the fluffies off to good homes with responsible owners, and, of course, we wish the same for their mothers. They are all sheltered in Minsko plentas 33a, Vilnius. For more information call +3706 0039525.

So, let's meet them:

ŠAKIRA'S CLASS

Šakira was staying in a company owned parking lot. Not only staying, she had 6 pups there as well. The company's employees looked after her for as long as they could, but the management wasn't happy, and nights became cold. So Šakira came to our shelter with her bunch of puppies. The puppies will grow up to big dogs, it seems their mother has Laika blood in her. But this does not mean we're trading "live security systems" , no, we think that properly trained from early years the puppies can live inside, despite their size.

We present:

The serious Marija Lopez

Where puppies come from...

Where do they not come from? Abandoned, lost, their owners gone. Their stories are all different and yet all similar. They all miss stability, a bowl of good food and a kind word. Thanks to the volunteers they can at least have two of the latter, but what about the rest? The rest depends on you, on the determination to take in a plain puppy, not a pure-bred one, not necessarily a young one. We will consult everyone who is planning to do this on which dog may be more suitable for your way of life and expectations, on how to look after them, and, of course, ask you, what will you do if you have difficulties, will you think nothing of taking the dog back to the shelter, or worse, or will you look for a solution? In fact, you must give an answer to yourself, just make it honest and truthful...

So, lets present the new puppies.

Jaša is a puppy from Jašiūnai. He's 2 to 4 years old. He's small and has a nice sand-coloured coat. And his ears stand so prettily:)

New dogs and puppies

New muzzles in the shelter again. Seniors and pups, all the dogs are waiting for new homes where they will be looked after and forget all the misfortunes of the past...

This young puppy girl, 3 months old, was found in S.Batoro street, next to some company's premises. The odds are no one is looking for her... Magnolija will be a big dog, an impressive beauty, perhaps similar to a stout shepherd. Please understand we're not giving dogs away as objects or as security systems - a big dog can live in a flat or house, not a dog pen, if you train her when she's young, and now is the right time:)

Liepa needs temporary care

Liepa has been in the shelter for a long time, since November. It is difficult for black cats to find homes, though their owners usually praise them... Also, Liepa has been ill for a while, she has had a cold. The adult but young cat was found near Liepkalnis bus stop. What was she doing there? Waiting for a bus to go home? Or maybe someone helpful brought her to the bus stop and left her there... That's how she lived until one day help came along...

Liepa did not feel at home in the shelter. She only felt at home in her rack, where she observed everything from high above. She did not chase other cats form her spot, but felt just as good without them. She would happily accept people's petting, but never called out for them, nor pull at their clothes when they passed by. She waited, quiet and calm, for her moment. But it would not come...

And then something unfortunate happened, Liepa had a throat inflammation, and though it wasn't serious, it had an odd side effect: the kitty couldn't wash herself. Her tongue hurt, and that is what kitties use to wash themselves! Her coat is soft and thick, so Liepa became messy.. Her back, her tummy was all shaggy. And try as you might to lick out such  shags, nothing happens.

Don't buy cheap Labradors for your grandmother!

Trust me, it's much better to buy her vitamins, a warm quilt, fine tea, and if your grandmother is brisk, energetic and really wants a dog - she can choose one herself.

That's the advice we'd like to give to the family who did something very shortsighted - bought their grandmother a Labrador. A Labrador with no documents of pedigree, not really a Labrador to be honest, but a mixed breed pup. And the grandmother? As it turned out, she'd didn't really need a dog. The girl endured this through her childhood, but she became bigger, and, as any young dog, wanted to play, skip, run. The family posted ads for a bit, trying to find her a new home, but today they brought Luna to the shelter.

Bielka and her eight little problems

Bielka was a small, stocky girl with slightly wavy hair, who was never spoiled, never looked after. She lived in a deserted summer house where she had a whole bunch of babies - six puppies. If it weren't for a caring passer-by, that's where she would have stayed, her coat filled with fleas, constantly hungry - there's never enough food you can find to feed such a team of pups.

Bielka was brought to the shelter with all her pups, and and soon after her bubbles were joined by two more adopted puppies, who were found in Nemėžis under a bush, their umbilical cords still wet - ordinary foundlings, just another case of neglecting to sterilize a pet, victims of their owners' cold hearts. The third foundling didn't make it.

The girl took them under her wing, and fed them like her own.

She's a caring mother. She feeds, washes, warms and protects the little ones. If only you could hear them, how they yelp and speak in their own language...

Little ones from the street in dire need of support

Sensitive readers are recommended not to look at the pictures.

We would also rather not look at them, but... These four poor kittens came to the shelter because it was their only hope of survival (thanks to Vilija, who collected them). Yes, their eyes are badly affected by conjunctivitis. Here their eyes have already been washed, but when they came in there were huge crusts of dirt and puss on them... So not all eyes will be saved. Yes, they are tiny and skinny, hardly fed by their mother, also ill, who has had many more ill kittens in Justiniškės,and because of her timidness proved impossible to catch.  Yes, yes, yes...

Bembis' difficult childhood

Quite often we have long discussions with visitors about just what kind of purebred dog do they expect to find here. What about that one, they ask, is it purebred? And that one? I need one for the dog pen...

No, they are not purebred, the absolute majority of our pups are mixed breed. Even though we say this one's a Labrador and that one's a Spaniel about dogs that have distinctive features of the breed, we have no documents of pedigree to prove this. We don't want to simply nod our heads and encourage the unrealistic expectations, but... Some have different opinions. More than once we have taken in a dog that was sold as a purebred, but when it grew up and, oh dear, turned out to be a mixed breed and the owners' love ended.

It's possible Bembis was also sold to someone as a Boxer, because he has features of the breed.

We are the puppies who were left behind...

How wide the sidewalk is next to the shelter. Plenty of space for boxes wrapped in duck tape with kittens inside, plenty of space to tie puppies to the fence and leave them in the rain or heat. That's how these three little guys came to our shelter. We're waiting for people who can give them a different life, who can show them animals can be kept responsibly, without unwanted offspring and thrown out pets...

The puppies are about 1,5 - 2 months old, they're unlikely to be very big dogs, but they might be of average size.

The brown girl was named Končita, the black boy with spots of brown is Džeksonas, and the wavy-haired pup is Džimas. Of course, the new owners can rename them, as long as they love them and protect them:)

We are puppies, and we want a home!

I should probably make this short: Amazing puppies need a home, stop:)

Is there anything more to say? Well, anyone who takes in a small puppy must be prepared for puddles, poo, yelping, chewing, playing, leash training and getting used to walks, vaccines, socialization...

Are you prepared? Then let me frighten you some more.

We can't say for sure how bug the puppies will be, we can only guess. Who will they resemble, their mother, father, grandpa? You'll have get used to the idea that it's going to be a surprise either way!

So our charming mixed breed pups are only given to those who measure friendship is something other than kilos or the resemblance to a purebred dog.

Nora's pup Hundas-Kukis

So what if they're purebred, if they're not loved

All right, maybe not loved. The animals in the shelter, purebred or not, all get love, they try to collect crumbs of it from the volunteers and helpers, but with so many animals and so little time, they're all craving for more love and attention.

It would be so different at home, at home, with real owners, with a true connection, based on trust.

The problem is that the myth of recent years -  that an animal is loved if it is purebred, and a lot of money has been paid for it, is all too easy to deny: today, in the shelter we have a senior Cocker Spaniel Stingas that has gastritis (and no one is looking for him)...
